British-Malaysian Composer Jasmin Kent Rodgman brings together the contemporary classical, electronics and sound art worlds to create powerful soundscapes and musical identities. An interdisciplinary artist and regular collaborator across various art forms including dance, word, film and VR, her music explores otherness, activism, memory, connection and plays with a sense of narrative.
Equally driven by how music is experienced and how environment can impact the listening process and audience response, Jasmin often builds bespoke platforms for her music including artists' moving image, site-specific installations and multidisciplinary, experimental theatre productions such as what the dog said to the harvest (SHUBBAK x Southbank Centre), TRIPTYCH (Kakilang Arts Festival x Shoreditch Town Hall), nineteen ways of looking (Kakilang Arts Festival) and send back the echo (United Strings of Europe, featured on BBC Arts).
Her music and live productions have been heard in places ranging from Southbank Centre's Queen Elizabeth Hall, Wigmore Hall, London Fashion Week, World Music Festival Shanghai, Edinburgh International Festival, Wilderness Festival, Spitalfields Music Festival, Roundhouse, Shoreditch Town Hall, Barbican, Tung Auditorium and the Royal Albert Hall. And she has enjoyed commissions and performances from ensembles and companies such as Manchester Collective, Music Theatre Wales, London Symphony Orchestra, Kaleidoscope Collective, Zubin Kanga, Shadwell Opera, Siwan Rhys & Miller-Porfiris Duo.
Her film scores have featured on BBC and at film festivals such as Venice Film Festival, Sundance, SXSW, Toronto International Film Festival, Kaohsiung International Film Festival and the London Short Film Festival including SXSW 2022 Award-winning VR series (Hi)Story of a Painting and Bawa's Garden, nominated for Best Documentary at Raindance Film Festival 2023. Her theatre scores include Julius Caesar (Royal Shakespeare Company), Titus Andronicus (Shakepeare's Globe), Olivier Award-nominated Paradise Now! (Bush Theatre), Britannicus (Lyric Hammersmith), Red Ellen (Northern Stage, Edinburgh Lyceum) and Missing Julie (Theatr Clwyd).
In 2020 she was an 'At Home in the World' Digital Artist-in-Residence with The Bagri Foundation; in 2018/19 she was a British Council + PRS Foundation Musician-in-Residence, living and composing for two months in Lanzhou, China; and in 2017/18, she was a London Symphony Orchestra Jerwood Composer, writing new music as well as producing and curating for the 2018 LSO season, mentored by composer Errollyn Wallen and director/producer Jude Kelly.
Activism has an important place within Jasmin's music. Much of her work investigates and challenges ideas centred around the female body, race and cultural heritage. An advocate of gender and racial equality, her wider creative work includes delivering mentorship programmes for young artists (We Tick Other, Roundhouse), speaking at international industry forums and events (British Council's Inspiring Women: China series), plus arts activism and music engagement projects (Music Masters: Many Voices) that seek to empower both community and artists alike.
